Commanderr Frank Clymer, Auxiliary Presedent Nancy Clymer, 3rd and 5th graders from Wilmington Manor Elementary School who participated in the Essay Contest.
Wilmington Manor Elementary School was contacted to see if they would like to participate in an Americanism essay contest for Stahl Post American Legion. The principal, Mr. Reese and the teachers of both classes were enthusiastic about the idea. We selected a third grade class, teacher Ms. Zimmerman and a fifth grade class, teacher Ms. Hood for this contest. Both classes would write an essay on the same topic, "What it means to be an American". The children worked on their paper in the classroom only. After the project was done, the teachers forwarded the essays to me. I took these essays to the ladies auxiliary meeting. We read each essay, took notes on each, we re-read them again, until we finally got the finalist for each class. The next day I took the eight essays selected to the school. The teachers sent the notice and invitation home with these children, inviting the children and families to Stahl Post on Thursday April 19, 2012 at 6PM. There was a good turn out of families and post members. Each child came to the stage and read their essay. We had (4) judges, Delaware Department President Beth McGinn, her daughters Katie and Coleen and Distict #2 Commander, Ray Abbott. They did a wonderful job! The Winners for the 3rd grade: 1st place-Kaitlyn Albanese, 2nd place-Zahnayah Bivings, 3rd place-Delaney Christopher, Robert Hein, Laci Fry...The Winners for the 5th grade: 1st place Tristan Garcia, 2nd place- Victoria Kirkley, 3rd place-Janai Jason. A cash award was given to all the winners! A check was also given to each teacher for a classroom pizza party and every student that participated received a certificate of appreciation for the essay contest. Everyone enjoyed some refreshments. Thanks to everyone for making this a Special Night!!!
